Why Should I Care?

David Brandon and Royster Harper ask that we 'Expect Respect'

The University of Michigan is committed to the success of all our students, staff and faculty. By working to create an environment that values and celebrates our diverse community and fosters respect for every individual, you can help ensure that all persons can perform up to their full potential.

  • Acts of bias and intolerance hurt both the person they are directed at and on the University community as a whole.
  • Being aware and sensitive to issues of bias is essential to creating and sustaining the best possible environment for learning, scholarship, creative activity, and working together.
  • The "Expect Respect" initiative was created for use by all members of the community. We encourage you to share these materials with fellow students and colleagues.

Together, we can create and maintain a respectful and inclusive environment that provides the support and opportunity necessary for each member of our community to prosper and achieve. These accomplishments can only be fully realized in a space where we value and celebrate both our similarities and differences. We are asking each one of you to make a conscious choice, step out of your comfort zones, and challenge yourselves to broaden your horizons. It may not be easy. Some of what you learn may run contrary to long-standing or core beliefs. However, if we ALL try, in a spirit of good will, we can make great strides towards becoming the community we aspire to be!
